Buyers Guide: What to expect from your Gladius boxing gloves?

If you are considering a pair of Gladius boxing gloves, this guide is here to help you make an informed decision.

Gladius gloves are proudly handmade in Mexico in small batches, built on a tradition of artisanal craftsmanship. Like all Mexican-made gloves, they come with a distinct character and knowing what to expect before you buy will ensure you get the most out of them.

Overall fit

Gladius gloves run on the larger side, both in height and width. Compared to other gloves in the same weight class, they have a notably bigger frame and a roomier hand compartment.

Fighters with average or smaller hands may find the hand compartment roomier than expected, particularly around the ring finger and pinky area. If you are between sizes or have average-sized hands, consider sizing down.

The depth of the finger pocket is generous and the width is well balanced. Thumbs are sewn parallel to the glove core and are designed with a shape that prevents fingers from jamming or feeling uncomfortable inside.

Both the velcro and lace-up models feature a cuff that extends to the middle of the forearm. It is designed to keep the wrist stable and locked in a neutral position, reducing the risk of bending on impact, which makes Gladius ideal for boxing training and somewhat restrictive for Muay Thai.

Padding

The padding is made of a multi-layered foam construction that combines natural latex (the core component) and EVA. It is medium in firmness: not stiff, but not pillowy soft. Although Gladius are Mexican-made, these are not horsehair gloves.

Our padding philosophy is to enable a good shock absorption while still letting users feel their knuckles landing on the punch, characterizing it as a modern puncher's glove that is not overly punishing. It can be used for all exercises on a boxing routine, but sparring should be limited only for the 16oz models.

The wrist area also features firm density foam both on the inside and the back, providing strong wrist support. One of the chief concerns in all our gloves is to avoid a top-heavy feel, keeping enough padding well distributed to have a well-balanced glove.

Buyers should expect a break-in period of about a week of consistent use, with gloves coming out of the box about 90% broken-in. For tips on how to effectively do it, read our guide on how to break-in your boxing gloves.

Skin

The skin is made from full genuine cowhide leather with satin finishing. The leather used varies within the range of 1 to 1.2mm of thickness and is sourced in Mexico. You may receive a product that has some small visible wrinkles or leather scars, which is normal to be expected on an artisanal product and have no impact on the glove's performance.

Double stitching is consistently executed across the entire glove, especially reinforced in stress areas. If you believe your glove does not feature quality stitching, please reach out to our support team.

Design

Gladius design guidelines are strict on color combinations that are sober and classic, maintaining our gloves usually restricted to a maximum of 3 different colors. We do not use graphics on our gloves except for the wreath-and-sword logo in the back of each glove.

Sizing

Gladius boxing gloves are available from 10oz to 16oz in both velcro and lace-up closure systems. Due to production constraints, heavier models are often prioritized in stock due to their increased demand.

Inner liner

The interior lining is made of polyester satin, smooth and comfortable against the hand. This material must be properly taken care of after use to reduce the build-up of foul smell.

You will also find the specific iconic seal of your glove model printed directly into the liner. This is a way for you to remember the story behind the model every time you wear it.

Other considerations

Apart from the quality of our boxing gloves, Gladius differentiates itself from other high-quality brands by offering some distinct features that go beyond the product itself:

  • All our fight gloves come with an original certificate of authenticity that attests the pair is original and has been inspected before shipping.

  • First-time buyers are welcomed to Gladius Lifetime Membership Club, which grants a lifetime discount of 8% on future purchases and early access to new drops.

  • Gladius gloves are inspired by history, nature and mythology. Every model carries a distinct name and story that inspires it.

  • Every pair purchased helps us donate $2 to organizations that help to preserve the stories behind each pair. Be it archeology organizations, NGOs or other groups that are preserving what inspired us.
